:!: This new album from swedish metal heads Pathos has really surprised me in a positive way. I'm not the most keen listener to this type of music, but the mix of thrash, doom, power, progressive and tradional heavy metal really works well and has captivated me. I wil even say that some of the riffs are death based, but it is mainly the thrash, power and doom elements that's on this album.
The sound is very(!) heavy all through the album. But instead of the typical power metal voice, Paul Schöning has a great way of approaching the songs. At times sounding like very rock like, then sounding like he's choking on a beetle, but mostly using the span of his powerful voice. And that gives the songs a whole new dimension. He's not the greatest singer in the world, but he has a very powerful voice. No doubt about that. If anything bad has to be said about the vocals, it's the production. The guitars are way up front and the voice is way in the back. It's hard to hear at times.
But what about the music and the tracks you ask. Are they any good? I have to say: Yes. They are not masterpieces, but difinitely worth a listen. The songs have a tendency to sound alot alike, but the overall quality and drive of the songs are good. You want to listen to it beacuse of the intensity. And that is a nice feature I think.
The title tracks "Katharis" being one of my favorite tracks on the album, has a kick in the face intro and opens this album splendidly.
But also "Inhale", "Suicidal Savior Lies" and "Violated" wich has a very nicely played melodic hard rock-ish solo at the end, are tracks that are worth a listen. They all are actually. There's not a "weak" track in the sense that it can not be heard. The drive and intensity in the playing is truly amazing on this very fine album.
Other great tracks are "Inner Ego" and "Revelation". Both songs have a great power and hard played guitars. And that goes for the entire record.
A few things caught my ear the first time I listened to it though. They have two different effects on the intro guitar, and they use both of them twice. I bit much in my opinion. "Borrowed Time" has the drive of a Nu-Metal song, wich I wondered about at first, but soon forgot, because of the intensity of the song.
"Inner Ego" has a main riff that reminds me of "Cemetary Gates" with Pantera. It is not a ripoff, but sounds more like a Pantera-inspired riff.
Watch out for these these guys. They are gonna be big!

:!: Pathos is a band located in Gothenburg, Sweden who knows how to mix their influences. Every kind of metal you could think of you will find in their music. No matter if its Thrash, Doom, Power, Progressive, Death or traditional Heavy Metal, in Pathos you'll find it. The members from Pathos can also be found in various other project bands. Daniel Antonsson plays in a Melodic Death Metal band called Dimension Zero and In Flames amongst others, Thomas Antonsson & Esko Salow play together in a Power/Speed-metal act called Nostradameus, and Paul Schöning has a project called Power Plant, and some singer/songwriter projects.
One thing I found immediately was the tightness between the drums, bass and guitars. It would sound great if they could pass off the production on stage as well, it’s quite reminiscent of the Iced Earth style production [latest albums of course]. If I had to complain about anything on the whole album, it would be that the guitars have a little too much distortion, but it’s not really that bad really.
Title track “Katharsis” starts the album off heavy with a Melodic Death style rolling chug then switching up into a Progressive verse. “Violated” is a seven minute masterpiece with just about everything you would like to hear in a song. Great melody and diverse change ups with the perfect headbanging tempo easily makes this the best song on the album. “Detonation” starts off like a Death Metal track and breaks into a Nevermore style track. “Divine Intensions” Closes off the album with a somewhat somber instrumental with clean guitars and samples, winding you down just right and having you feel completely satisfied with what you have just experienced.
This album is a complete experience, leaving no stone unturned. The only thing I can think of is that this album is too good to be true. It doesn’t matter what style of Metal you like, this album has something for everybody, and that’s why I personally think this album deserves such praise. Iced Earth, Nevermore, Iron Maiden, Soilwork and even Cannibal Corpse fans will not want to miss out on this release, what a masterpiece.
